Sprint Comes Out with Cell Phone Jewelry

In response to Nokia's new Imagewear line of cell-phone compatible jewelry accessories, Sprint has added a necklace strap to a regular cell phone, condescendingly believing that teenagers are so idiotic that they'll wear a cell phone as a necklace.

Microsoft Admits It: Longhorn Won't Ship Until 2006

I reported in this space August 20 that Jupiter Research said the next version of Windows, a.k.a. "Longhorn," wouldn't ship in 2004 as Microsoft previously announced, but two years later, in 2006. Now Mary Jo Foley of "Microsoft Watch" says Microsoft is finally using the 2006 date in public presentations, but hasn't formally announced the revised rollout. This phenomenon -- wherein a company quietly starts using information that contradicts more favorable information announced previously -- is so widespread in technology that it needs a name. How about: "announcement creep"? UPDATE: Gates admits that "Longhorn could be 2005 or 2006."

Rumormongor: Date Set for iTunes for Windows (October 16)

AppleInsider reported today that Apple plans to roll out its iTunes online music store for Windows users during a media event October 16 at Moscone West in San Francisco, California. The current version of iTunes is available only to Mac users. Update: The rumor was right.

Casio, KDDI Announce 2 Megapixel Camera Phone

Japan's KDDI Corp. plans to release the world's first commercially available 2-megapixel camera phone in the Japanese market. That's cool, but the phones also feature navigation based on both GPS and BREW and sport built-in FM radios. In other news, American phones still suck.

Microsoft Wins Patent on IM Feature Everybody Uses

The U.S. Patent Office has granted Microsoft a patent on the idea of IM software notifying you if the person you're chatting with is typing. Microsoft's IM software has long offered this feature, but so has AIM, and Yahoo.
