The fictional TV town of Mayberry, North Carolina, was modeled after the real hometown of star and creator Andy Griffith, which is Mount Airy, North Carolina, population: 8,500. The town announced today that Mount Airy-based 802Link, Inc., and the Greater Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce are rolling out free Wi-Fi access downtown. Mount Airy will kick-off its new wireless capability during a block party on the corner of Oak and Main streets on October 23.
New Re-Writable Printer Paper Demonstrated
Shinsho Corp and Majima Laboratory showed off a prototype of their recyclable, rewritable paper at CEATEC in Japan last week. The paper should be available by spring of next year. Called "Thermo-Mag," the paper can be printed on using a special printer, then erased and reused. The paper uses magnetic particals embedded in wax in the paper, and is erased at the same time it's printed upon by melting the wax and re-arranging the suspended particles. The paper is perfect for, er, driving up printing costs and lowering quality.
Fun, Games Online Pubs Announced
The technology sector must be recovering. Both Ziff-Davis and Wired have launched sites covering the fun-and-games industry. Ziff-Davis has launched a site called 1UP.com, which is a site for Xbox, Sega and other gaming enthusiasts. Wired has launched a gadget newsletter called GadgetLab.

Muslim Mobile Phone Points Toward Mecca
LG Electronics has come out with a mobile phone for Muslims. It has a built-in compass that, after users input their current locations, points to Mecca, Saudi Arabia. (Muslims who pray do so facing Mecca, so the cell phone should be a big hit among the devout.) Combined with free SMS prayer alerts, the LG Muslim phone can become an indispensable device for Muslims worldwide.
NEC to Ship TV Camera Phone
NEC will become the first company ever to release a cell phone with a built in TV tuner when it ships its V601N phone in December. The phone has a 216x160-resolution 2.2 inch TFT liquid crystal display, has 7 megabytes of memory and can take 480×640 pictures or record up to 30 seconds of MPEG-4 video.

Rise of the Machines: New Martial Arts Robots to Defeat Mankind, Take Over World
Asia's largest electronics and computing fair in Tokyo -- CEATEC 2003 (Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technologies) -- was kicked off Saturday with the unveiling of robots that can do martial arts. A robot called Morph3 has 138 pressure sensors, 30 different onboard motors and 14 computer chips and special programming that enables it to do karate. A Fujitsu robot called HOAP-2 does a Chinese martial art called taijiquan and Sumo stances.
