Georgia Tech Invents Digital Camera System for Perfect Buns

Georgia Institute of Technology scientists are working on a system for automating the process of watching hamburger buns for flaws. Fresh-baked buns are scanned by a digital camera as they move along a production line. Items not measuring up in terms of color, shape, seed distribution, size or other criteria are identified by the computerized eye's imaging software and eventually removed automatically from the conveyor. Scientists hope that someday this process can be used to streamline American presidential elections...

UN Blames Spam Epidemic On U.S.

The U.S. is responsible for most spam, according to the UN. The reports I've seen don't specify what criteria are used to determine country of origin. It's no secret that most major Internet-based e-mail services are based in the U.S. The question is: If some spammer in Romania, France or Nigeria sends spam through Hotmail, Yahoo or AOL, is it all counted as spam of American origin?

New Robot Vacuum Cleaner Has Web Cam

Samsung's new VC-RP30W vacuum cleaner robot has a built in web cam. The VC-RP30W creates an internal 3D map of your house, which it uses to vacuum every corner. It can do its chores automatically while you're away, or you can control it over the Internet and see what it sees through its built-in web camera. When it's running low on battery power, it goes back to its dock and charges itself. Finally, it purifies the air while it's vacuuming with a built-in air ionizer.

Game Consoles Headed for Fall

In-Stat reports that video game consoles are about to take a dive in shipment numbers. They're expecting the number sold to drop 2 million units under what was sold in 2002. They also report a revenue drop of $2 billion. But how is that possible if the average price isn't $1,000 per console? What am I missing here?

Mobile Phones More Numerous in China than Landline Phones

The People's Daily reports that the number of mobile phones in China surpassed the number of "fixed" telephones in October -- 255.139 million and 259.638 million, respectively.

Dell Moving Jobs from India to U.S.

Dell is moving some tech support jobs from India to Round Rock, Texas, reportedly because of complaints by U.S. customers that they couldn't understand Indian accents. Consumers will still get Indian tech support, while the U.S. help desk will support business customers. Obvious question: If the problem is understanding accents, how is moving jobs to Texas going to help?
