Volkswagen and Infineon are working on a new in-car wireless platform called the Telematics Unit that uses Bluetooth to gain access to the SIM cards inside the mobile phones of the driver and passengers. When someone in the car is called, SMS messages, telephone numbers or names of callers appear on the car's instrument panel display. When you want to make a call, just talk to the dashboard (to take advantage of voice-command) or push buttons on the steering wheel and the call is placed through the cell phone in your pocket. The system is still in development, and the company plans to market the technology to other car companies.
