AOL CDs Not As Useless As Previously Thought

It turns out that AOL disks aren't entirely useless. According to the Associated Press, the disks scare away birds when you hang them in the garden.



Robot Version of Sci-Fi Author Chats Away At NextFest

An android robot modeled after the late science fiction writer Philip K. Dick, created by Hanson Robotics, carried on interviews and conversations, complete with facial expressions and lifelike blinking eyes, at WIRED Magazine's NextFest event. The robot's responses are mainly quotes from Dick's writings. It can event recognize people it's already met.



Nissan Working On In-Dash Bird's-Eye View

Nissan is working on an advanced system for totally eliminating blind spots while driving, providing the driver with a view that looks likes video from 50 feet above the car looking down. The illusion is created with a computer that synthesizes video from side, front and rear cameras into a real-time image that looks like a birds-eye view. Nissan Presage cars have sported left and right cameras for two years -- future models will get the addition of front and rear cameras, plus the computerized display.



Prius Hack Cranks Mileage to 180 M.P.G.

A startup near Los Angeles, California, called Energy Control Systems Engineering has created a system for tricking a Toyota Prius into delivered up to 180 miles per gallon in the city, and up to 100 miles per gallon on the freeway. The system involves extra batteries, which must be charged by the user, and a hack that tricks the Prius into thinking its batteries always have a full charge. The company plans to sell the hack via a company called Clean-Tech for about $12,000.

Tiny Color Cell Phone Printer Sighting Reported

A company called Mbasis showed off its tiny DAMO color cell phone printer at SEK 2005 show in Korea recently, as well as this cheesecake poster. The printer is intriguing us for two years. First unveiled as a concept at Comdex 2003, then announced as a shipping product last year, the printer churns out cell phone pictures as stickers. It currently works only with LG Telecomm "Canyou" phones, but the company has been promising for some time that they'll make it available for other models (hopefully they meant other models of cell phones, not other models like this one in the poster).

Optical Zoom For Camera Phones Created

Hitachi Maxell Ltd. has created optical zoom lens technology designed for camera phones, which they say may go into production as early as this year.
